Can A Lawn Mower Go Faster Than A Maserati?

If you’re the kind of guy who gave up the Maserati dream when your wife and kids came along, but you watch with envy each time your neighbour drives his Maserati Gran Turismo MC Stradale up his driveway, Honda may have just made your day. They have invented a lawn mower that can actually go faster than your neighbour’s Maserati!

So, next time you’re out mowing your lawn, or chatting to your neighbour while your lawn mowing guy is mowing for you, take a deep breath and enjoy the moment when you tell your neighbour that there’s a lawn mower that can accelerate from 0-100 km/hr (or 0-62 mph) in 4 seconds, compared to your neighbour’s Gran Turismo which takes a (yawn, so slow) 4.5 seconds.

How can I buy this super fast lawn mower?

Unfortunately, the Honda Mean Mower is not for general sale. Which means that unless you’re the CEO of Honda, or the 007 of lawn mower hijacking, you won’t be bringing one home to flaunt to your neighbour any time soon. The Honda Mean Mower was designed and built by Honda UK’s British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) partner, Team Dynamics, more as an exercise in ‘what’s possible?’, than as a product to sell in the aisles at Bunnings.

How does the Honda lawn mower go so fast?

The determined British team re-engineered a Honda HF2620 Lawn Tractor from the ground-up, adding an all-new fabricated chassis, custom-made from 4130 chromoly, to provide a strong, safe but light mower platform. They used a 1000cc engine from a Honda VTR Firestorm, together with a bespoke suspension and the wheels from an ATV.

The result? A superpower ride-on lawn mower that was officially clocked at a top speed of 187.6 km/hr (116.5 mph) last year by the Guinness World Records team at the IDIADA Proving Ground in Tarragona, Spain. Honda’s result far surpassed the previous world record of 141.3 km/hr (87.8 mph), which was set by a Kawasaki-powered lawn mower in 2010.

But can the super fast lawn mower cut grass?

Absolutely. Honda claim that as well as having phenomenal speed for a lawn mower, their invention can still cut grass at up to 24.14 km/hr (15 mph), with its pair of electric motors that can control cutting cable speeds of up to 4000 rpm.

Just imagine how much faster you could mow your lawn than your neighbour, if only you could get your hands on this amazing engineering feat!

Congratulations on your supermower, Honda. But can you achieve an engineering feat as equally impressive with your upcoming state-of-the-art hybrid supercar Honda NSX.
