Some countries are perfect for exploring in a motorhome or campervan. Whether you are travelling through Australia‘s remote outback, taking a drive to see the autumn foliage in the USA or setting off from Auckland to see the Bay of Islands, there is no shortage of incredible sights to discover from behind the wheel.
Of course, hiring a campervan seems ideal if you are travelling in a group and looking to cut down on accommodation costs. However, there are a few things you need to consider before you book your campervan or motorhome. Here are the top three things you need to consider.
How much space will you need?
When it comes to RVs, there is a lot to choose from. Narrow your options by deciding how many people are travelling, and what amount of storage space you require. If you are covering long distances, you want to be able to travel comfortably.
You will see the term “berth” used to describe how many people the vehicle can comfortably sleep. Campervans and motorhomes normally sleep up to six people, so for larger groups you may need multiple vehicles.
Do you want your campervan to have kitchen or bathroom facilities?
Decide what features you want your campervan to have. Do you want the vehicle to come with kitchen facilities, a bathroom, or just a bit of extra storage space. Some people might prefer to hire a smaller vehicle and use the facilities at holiday parks.
Some extras you may need to bring along with you, or pre-arrange with the rental company. If you are travelling with young children, you will need child seats. If you’re unfamiliar with your destination you may also want to think about a GPS.
Where will you be travelling?
Read some advice about driving campervans before you pick up the vehicle. Many new drivers struggle if they are used to smaller vehicles. This may also be a factor to consider when choosing what size vehicle you rent. Smaller campervans will be much easier to manoeuvre, especially if you are travelling in urban areas.
The roads you are planning to travel on may also be a factor. For example, if you are planning to drive on the windy mountains of New Zealand you may want a smaller vehicle. You also need to be able to drive a vehicle with manual transmission.
